B,
One thing that keeps happening to all of us is just this overwhelming sense
of sorrow for all that has happened here and, particularly the US' part in
it. You cannot imagine how warm, generous and proud all of these people are.
They have been at war for just forever. There seems to be a collective sense
of relief that there is some peace for them. They are so incredibly proud of
this place and happy to show it off a bit.
The day before yesterday, as we were leaving our hotel in Hanoi, one of the
tough racer guys on this trip just started tearing up as he was checking
out. He said to the clerk how sorry he was that we had done what we did
here. The clerk reached across the counter and held his arm and said " we
are sorry too."
