The Reader

"Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns
driven time and again off course, once he had plundered
the hallowed heights of Troy." -- Homer, The Odyssey
I've just watched Stephen Daldry's The Reader. Good performances. Lots of shame. A wee bit dull, dare I say? I'm somewhat suspicious now of anything set against the backdrop of the holocaust because doesn't it manipulate emotion out of one? I don't know. Kate Winslet can do no wrong. Ralph Fiennes plays himself, with a mild German accent, but I loved hearing him read and felt nostalgic for those little cassette tape recorders.
