Ribes Aureum

My theory that one could live very happily in the Los Angeles wilderness during May and June is reinforced by the discovery of golden currants (ribes aureum) in the Little Tujunga wash. I'm not sure how they'd taste as jelly with a nice bit of roast lamb, but they're there for the grabbing, along with the California flannelbush, devil's lettuce, yellow tansy mustard, western goldentop, mugwort, milkweed and the glorious chapparal yucca, which blooms like an enormous white, flowering asparagus.

  1. Yes. I always imagine the Chumash Indians, in Santa Barbara, living where they experienced true abundance.
