You gotta love Hollywood

You gotta love Hollywood. At a brainstorming supper for my daughter's school this evening a noted Los Angeles magazine editor greeted me very sweetly and congratulated me on my new-ish studio job. A director whom we both knew stood close by. "It just goes to show" said the editor, "that you should always be nice to everyone because you never know where they will end up." No sooner had the words fallen out of her mouth than she realized her hilarious faux pas and stuttered, "what I mean is I always tell my children to be nice to everyone because they could be your boss one day." I skipped over the embarrassing silence by serving myself a large plate of Cuban pork and platanos with black beans and remembered the words my friend LH told me while we lunched one day at Paty's in Burbank: "To survive in Hollywood, you must never take any of it personally."

Classic! Funny how I naively thought that you should be nice to people because you should be nice to people. Thank god for the saving grace of Cuban pork with platanos and black beans. (My favorite is from El Rincon Criollo on Sepulveda in Culver City.) xoxo

Be nice to people JUST IN CASE you will need something from them one day. ... that was Buddha right? Gandhi?

I've always heard it as "be nice to people on the way up, because you'll see them again on the way down." Can't see how that's too embarrassing, but I never had much reputation to worry about anyway.

(Tried to submit this, but Google tells me: "Memcache value is null for FormRestoration"). That's English, right? Please tell me that's in English.
