Esperanza/Hope
This is a katydid, an esperanza, a sign of hope. Wishing everyone a hopeful 2013 from the lovely green creature that landed on my window this afternoon.
Chinese lore includes the katydid as a symbol of thriving prosperity and fertility.
"No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream." -- From "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson.

Oooooh. 'The Haunting of Hill House' almost did for me when I was a teenager, and the very thought of it still sends shivers down my spine.
