My neighbor has made the brave move to Park City, Utah, with her husband and two small children, for the duration of the ski season and maybe longer. They're lovely neighbors and we miss them. I do love these missives which arrive every few weeks or so. Reprinted with permission!
You know you live in Utah when...you awaken to the sounds of avalanche control blasts and get 5 inches of snow in 3 hours that leaves your car, equipped with the latest in snow tire technology, sideways on the driveway, forcing you to rely on the only mother in town you know with a 4-wheel drive to pick up both your kids from 2 different schools and deliver them to your snow-laden doorstep.
but that was just today.
utah adventure 2008 has enthusiastically lived up to its name. i'm told by innumerable locals that this is a record early and severe winter, the likes of which hasn't been seen here for roughly a decade. must be our lucky year!
we had a full house for the duration of the sundance film festival (jan. 17 - 27), with friends visiting from LA, vegas, LA & LA. personally, i only had one random celeb sighting, quentin tarantino at starbuck's. but brad and i each managed to see one film from the festival, though it was not the same film, nor was it on the same date, sadly. however, in typical bradley fashion, schmoozing was in order the night he attended his screening (see star-studded photos below).

other notable events of late:
dakota has graduated in his ski program at school and is now on blue runs (intermediate), so now we get to ski/ride together. it's great, and i am 100% sure he will be eclipsing my ability well before the end of the season. stella is still locked onto sweet pea, a training run, which she mastered the first day but refuses to leave behind. where does she get such stubbornness?
i just submitted my first show script to the local television station (parkcity.tv). on a lark, i contacted the local station owner to let him know there's a new producer in town with a little extra unoccupied time and after an hour of chatting, he asked me to executive produce 2 half-hour magazine shows and host his morning show! had to decline that morning show gig (still not a morning girl), but i am planning to take on the two magazine shows, one of which i am developing for kids, to be hosted by one dashing 8 year old boy i know....
events of today:
my very first "category 2" snow storm (total of 12" fell in park city today)
first "snow day" in 10 years to close public schools, albeit after lunch
200 auto accidents in utah county
3 closed freeways
1 closed airport
wall to wall coverage of the passing of the LDS president/prophet (big news here. huge.)
and finally, for those still concerned... recent dinners have included spaghetti with improvised sauce, 2 versions of mac & cheese, and 3 crockpot meals (my new fave).
more to come!
xoxo
