"So I just x'd this M guy - and Facebook said he would not be notified. So I just got curious - how did your 'victim' learn that she'd been dumped? Do people start their day with a headcount of FB friends, and then determine who is missing from previous headcounts? Doesn't anyone work anymore?"

If you went to look at someone's profile it would no longer allow you to. Perhaps that's how they figured it out.
I recently broke up with someone and told them that I was going to remove them from my facebook account to discourage my temptation to look at his profile.
Ah, the perils of modernity.
