I am enormously grateful to Jeff Gordinier, ex-EW writer and the author of "X Saves The World" for an innocuous status update on FB last week. It said: Jeff can't stop listening to Neutral Milk Hotel. Based on that hearty recommendation I downloaded what has to be one of the most beautiful, wild, strange albums ever, In An Aeroplane Over The Sea (available for download on iTunes). Here is a piece about the band's enigmatic, Salinger-esque frontman, Jeff Mangum.
I wrote to Jeff to thank him and he offered up another gem:
'Another tremendously moving obscurity: "Ballad of the Broken Seas" by Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan. I pretty much guarantee you'll love it.' He's right.
